Technical Seminar - Awareness-raising & migrant empowerment

The technical seminar on awareness-raising and migrant empowerment is the third seminar in the third series of technical seminars on immigration and integration, which will lead to the third edition of the Handbook on Integration for Policy-makers and Practitioners, due in 2009 (click here for the first edition and here for the second edition). It will take place in Athens on 31 March and 1 April 2008, hosted by the Greek Ministry of Interior. MPG acts as an independent consultant to the European Commission for both the organisation of the technical seminars and the preparation of the third edition of the Handbook.

The Athens seminar aims at offering a forum for exchanging views, experiences and good practices on the issues of awareness-raising and migrant empowerment, among all stakeholders: policy makers, researchers, local authorities, representatives of international organizations and the civil society.

In particular, the seminar will focus on:

a)     - Awareness-raising among the general public as a means to improve understanding of the issues related to migration and integration. The goal of such information campaigns and events is to provide information on the role and contribution of migrants in the host society and to sensitise the public on this issue, thus contributing to the mutual adaptation of all citizens;

  -     - Empowerment measures targeted at individual migrants and their associations as a means to improve the capacity (knowledge and resources) of migrants to make their own choices and their situation and take action on issues related to integration. The goal of such activities is to enable migrants and their associations to become actors in public life.
