Summary
Participation and Citizenship: Can Cultural Institutions in Europe lead the way? Should they?
The EU and many of its Member States promote 'Active citizenship'. The concept has been put forward in search of citizens who make use of their rights and assume additional responsibilities - citizens who volunteer and get involved with each other through associations, clubs or faith groups, who participate in processes, which shape public services, public opinion and ideas for the future.
Description
Cultural participation, cultural democracy and cultural policy will all be examined over the course of this forum. Jan Niessen from MPG will present 'Cultural Diversity in Cultural Institutions: Researching and Benchmarking Commitments' an outlook on a joint project of the Platform for Intercultural Europe and the Migration Policy Group.
The intercultural cause can’t be pursued in the cultural sector in isolation. It needs explicit links to efforts for the recognition of diversity elsewhere. As an independent non-profit European organisation which has researched and promoted diversity strategies in many sectors: political parties, foundations, multi-national companies etc, MPG has embarked on a partnership with the Platform for Intercultural Europe to research diversity strategies in the cultural sector in Europe. MPG Director Jan Niessen will present a first draft of benchmarks for diversity management in cultural institutions.
