Description

Technical Seminars on Integration and ImmigrationThe technical seminar on the acquisition of nationality, citizenship and national identity is the second seminar in the third series of technical seminars on immigration and integration, which will lead to the third edition of the Handbook on Integration for Policy-makers and Practitioners, due in 2009 (click here for the first edition and here for the second edition). The Issues Paper on Acquisition of Nationality, Citizenship and National Identity can be downloaded here.

Focusing on the naturalisation of adult legally-resident non-nationals, the technical seminar will be structured around three roundtable discussions:

  • From reception to acquisition of nationality: debate on the citizenship process
  • Procedures for the acquisition of nationality: comparison of legislations and practices
  • The promotion of common values: content, actions and symbols of national citizenship

The purpose of this seminar, which will be organised in Paris on 26 and 27 November 2007 by the Ministry of Immigration, Integration, National Identity and Co-development and the Ministry of Labour, Social Relations and Solidarity, is (1) to discuss the concepts of nationality, citizenship and national identity; and (2) to discuss the extent to which the procedures for the acquisition of different forms of citizenship impede or facilitate this acquisition.
