Council of Europe

At the request of the Council of Europe, MPG prepared the report Diversity and cohesion: new challenges for the integration of immigrants and minorities.
MPG staff acted as consultants to an editorial group established by the Council of Europe. Between April 1998 and December 1999, this Group met six times and discussed various drafts of the report. During the same period, a series of Round Tables were held in newer countries of immigration on immigrant and minority issues, and a hearing was organised in Strasbourg. The European Committee on Migration also discussed the various draft versions of the report and adopted the report at its 42nd meeting (Strasbourg, May 2000). The report will guide the Council's work on integration issues and will assist member states across Europe to design and implement diversity and cohesion policies. The report was launched at a European conference hosted by the Belgium government (Namur, September 2000), and constitutes the background document to the Council of Europe's 7th Conference of European Ministers responsible for Migration Affairs in Helsinki on 16 - 17 September 2002. The report can be ordered in Czech, Dutch, English, French or Russian from the Council of Europe.
