Migration & Mobility

About our migration and mobility programme

The Migration Policy Group promotes a people-centred and rights based approach to migration. The Migration & Mobility programme focuses on people on the move across borders as well as within societies.

MPG’s work examines the conditions that enhance or restrict migrants’ opportunities to contribute to the wellbeing, not only of Europe’s diverse societies, but also of countries and regions of origin within the context of international human rights and development.

The programme is guided by the following objectives:

  • Produce and disseminate high quality information and analysis
  • Bring stakeholders together in networks of expertise to:
    • Inform debates
    • Raise standards
    • Learn from each other
    • Act together

More and more organisations are engaging in migration debates at overlapping local, regional, national and European levels. This calls for more comparison, consultation and sophisticated exchanges of information and learning on policies and practices.

MPG designs and implements innovative tools empowering stakeholders to contribute to local, national and European migration policies. This work highlights the linkages, as well as the gaps, between these levels.

Tools include:

  • User-friendly data and information
  • Comparative analysis
  • Expert networking
  • Policy recommendations

Value Migration (summary)

Value_Migration-summaryThe Migration Policy Group, in partnership with the Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration(SVR), is to look at the appropriateness of instruments for retaining students in different EU Member States, against a backdrop of global competition for talent.

By surveying international students in the final stages of their studies from a number of universities in each of five EU Member States (United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands), the project will comparatively analyse:

  • The propensity for graduates to stay in the country of graduation
  • The reasons they intend to stay (or leave)
  • The relevance, awareness and appreciation of EU Member State regulations to encourage retention

European immigration policy approaches (summary)

This project aims to describe, compare and assess the policies on immigration for employment (thus not for social, study and protection purposes) of the 27 Member States of the European Union.

The project will lead to the publication of three on-line papers which can be read jointly and individually. The first paper, A fair and reasonable deal, describes the scope of the research and provides a detailed account of the theoretical framework on which it is based. The second paper, Assessing immigration policies, presents the actual research outcomes by way of a country by country overview as well as a comparative analysis. The third paper, Improving European policies, puts this research into the European context and provides an overview and analysis of current EU policies. The research was carried in 2012 measuring the rules as they stood in each of the 27 EU Member States on 31st January 2012.
