The Law Review provides two in-depth analytical articles as well as an overview of the latest developments in European anti-discrimination law and policy, reflecting as far as possible the state of affairs as of 15 June 2014.

In this issue:

  • Discrimination and its Sanctions – Symbolic vs. Effective Remedies in European Anti-discrimination Law by Romanița Iordache and Iustina Ionescu

The article provides comprehensive analysis of the Court of Justice of the EU’s case-law regarding requirements for effective, proportionate and dissuasive sanctions in discrimination cases. The authors, who were both directly involved in bringing and defending the Associaţia Accept case (C-81/12) before the CJEU, refer specifically to this case ruling when reflecting upon the practice with regards to sanctions in the 33 European countries covered by the European Network of Legal Experts in the non-discrimination field.

  • Collective actions under European anti-discrimination law by Lilla Farkas

The author draws upon her extensive experience as a practising lawyer bringing collective action cases, in particular in the field of Roma discrimination in education, to provide an in-depth article examining the EU legal framework and the national laws of the 33 countries covered by the Network relating to collective actions in discrimination cases.
