Report on discrimination of Roma children in education

Discrimination of Roma children in education EN FINAL.pdf (PROTEGE) - Adobe ReaderThe European Network of legal experts in the non-discrimination field has published a new thematic report entitled Discrimination of Roma children in education, authored by Lilla Farkas. This report provides an update to a previous thematic report by the same author published by the Network in 2007, entitled Segregation of Roma children in education: Addressing structural discrimination through the Race Equality Directive.

This new report demonstrates that seven years after the previous report was published, discrimination in the field of education – and more particularly segregation – is still a reality for Roma children in a number of EU Member States. This specific challenge therefore remains one of the most pressing political, social and human rights issues which need to be tackled.

This report is published at a time when the European Commission has recently initiated infringement proceedings before the Court of Justice of the EU against the Czech Republic, arguing specifically that this Member State has failed to respect the requirements of the Racial Equality Directive with regards to Roma in the field of education. Thus, the report provides highly valuable and timely insight into the current situation with regards to this specific issue in concerned Member States, including the Czech Republic.
