Value Migration meeting: Mobile Talent? International Students as Highly-Qualified Immigrants 19/04/2012

Summary

The Value Migration project team organised a meeting last Thursday, the 19th of April as part of the project analysing Europe’s competitiveness in the retention of international students moving from the status of student to highly skilled worker.

Description

MPG presented our research on the legal and policy developments at the EU level as well as the national legal frameworks. MPG’s Director, Jan Niessen was invited to sit on the panel ‘Trends on International Student Migration and Political Measures in European Perspective’.

The team has surveyed 7,000 international students at 25 universities in France, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK and compiled a preliminary report on the legal rules that apply in each of these countries.

About the Value Migration Project

The Migration Policy Group, in partnership with The Expert Council of German Foundations on Integration and Migration (SVR), is looking at the appropriateness of instruments for retaining students in different EU Member States, against a backdrop of global competition for talent.

By surveying international students in the final stages of their studies from a number of universities in France, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK, and assessing the legal rules that apply to them, the project will comparatively analyse:

  • The propensity for graduates to stay in the country of graduation
  • The reasons they intend to stay (or leave)
  • The relevance, awareness and appreciation of EU Member State regulations to encourage retention
