It brings together <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emerging New European leaders with prior civic and political participation experience in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">space for training, knowledge-sharing and networking. During the sessions, the participants <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engage with Democracy Academy Speakers \u2013 experienced migrant leaders with proven <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">successes in work related to the themes of the academy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The participants who complete the academy are better able to maximise their engagement in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decision-making processes and to amplify fellow New Europeans\u2019 civic and political <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">participation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The 2023 academy brought together emerging and established migrant leaders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first annual Democracy Academy took place in November-December 2023. It included <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five online sessions dedicated to the issues of participation, evidence-based advocacy, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organising for sustainability and resilience, mobilising and campaigning, and participatory <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decision-making. These topics were selected based on the feedback of migrant leaders <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously interviewed for the New Europeans Initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first academy speakers included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Anila Noor<\/strong>, Founder and Managing Director of the New Women Connectors (NWC)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Razan Ismail,<\/strong> Founder and Managing Director of the Kudwa Association<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jair Schalkwijk<\/strong>, project leader at IZI Solutions Controle Alt Delete<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dr Salome Mbugua<\/strong>, Founder and CEO of AkiDwA<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Juliana Santos Wahlgren<\/strong>, Director of the European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN),<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Yonous Muhammadi<\/strong>, General Director of the Greek Forum of Refugees (GFR)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Adnan Abdul Ghani<\/strong>, Founder of the Support Group Network (SGN)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Lucky Khambule<\/strong>, Co-Founded of the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(MASI)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Noura Benchicar<\/strong>, Director of Formaat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The academy was successfully completed by over 20 participants. They were chosen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">among other applicants to ensure that the group included individuals of diverse backgrounds <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">based in different EU countries. The participants who successfully engaged in the sessions <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were issued with certificates of completion.
