Our research highlights key principles that must guide any fair and effective return process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Comprehensive Assistance<\/strong>: Returnees must receive both pre- and post-return support, including clear information on their rights, legal aid, and material and financial assistance for reintegration.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Detention as a Last Resort<\/strong>: Any use of detention should be strictly necessary and proportionate, ensuring that alternatives are prioritised.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Human Rights Protections<\/strong>: Robust safeguards and independent monitoring mechanisms must be in place to prevent human rights violations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alternatives to Return<\/strong>: Return decisions should be assessed on a case-by-case basis, considering individual, family, and labour market needs, and providing regularisation pathways where appropriate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stakeholder Involvement<\/strong>: Civil society organisations, including NGOs, human rights groups, and migrant organisations, must be actively involved in the return process to ensure transparency and accountability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MPG will continue to monitor and assess EU Member States\u2019 adherence to these key dimensions through the <strong>Migrant Return Policy Index (MIREX)<\/strong>.
