In the afternoon, the two strands of the Network met together with the European Commission for the book presentation of \u2018The rights of Roma in European courts\u2019 by the authors and of the recent progress report of the State Commission on Discrimination and Racism regarding equality duty in the public sector in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annual Legal Seminar\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 28 November 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As every year, this year\u2019s edition of the Annual Legal Seminar brought together all the Network experts and stakeholders from across Europe adding five more countries in 2025 (the EU member states and Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Georgia, Iceland, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and the UK), to reflect on the state of equality and non-discrimination law at a moment of growing political and societal pressure.<\/p>\n<p>As in previous years, the Seminar served as an important forum for dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and collaborative problem-solving among those working to advance equality in Europe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Diverse and Engaged Community of Participants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Seminar gathered <strong>around 200 participants<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Network experts from across the EU and beyond,<\/li>\n<li>Representatives of the European Commission,<\/li>\n<li>Officials from Member State governments and national equality bodies, and<\/li>\n<li>Experts from selected EU-level NGOs and other interested organisations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The diversity of professional backgrounds enriched the discussions and highlighted the value of cross-sector cooperation in tackling current challenges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Themes and Discussions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MPG\u2019s Director Isabelle Chopin opened the event and introduced the presentations and discussions. The event then started with a presentation from Director for Equality and Non-Discrimination in <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/about\/departments-and-executive-agencies\/justice-and-consumers_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Directorate General Justice and Consumers<\/a>, Ana Carla Pereira, on the focus and latest strategies from the Commission in its work to reinforce gender equality and the fight against discrimination, including notably the new LGBTIQ+ strategy, AI, the enforcement of the Equality Bodies new standards directives, the geopolitical challenges and the rule of law being questioned, disability issues, the latest gender equality directives and their implementation and the Commission\u2019s renewed commitment regarding the long-time pending so called \u2018Horizontal Directive\u2019 (Equal Treatment Directive).<\/p>\n<p>The keynote address by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/catherine-barnard-47965669\/\"><strong>Professor Catherine Barnard<\/strong><\/a>, \u2018Reshaping discrimination law for the modern age?\u2019 explored innovative ways to modernise discrimination law, with a particular focus on the employment context.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop sessions included presentations of the forthcoming thematic reports as well as lively discussions on a wide range of issues, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Update on <strong>European case-law<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The role of <strong>NGOs and trade unions<\/strong> in supporting the enforcement of anti-discrimination law,<\/li>\n<li>Recent <strong>CJEU case law on LGBTIQ rights<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li><strong>I<\/strong><strong>nstructions to discriminate<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li>Gender equality and <strong>access to healthcare<\/strong> in the EU<\/li>\n<li><strong>Intersectional discrimination<\/strong> and the EU pay transparency directive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These exchanges reflected both the complexity of the current legal landscape and the creativity of practitioners seeking to navigate it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusions and Reflections<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A clear message emerged across the sessions: the need to <strong>counter the growing backlash<\/strong> against human rights and equality policies, challenges in access to justice for victims and the reinforcement of the structures that protect them. Participants underscored the essential role played by the Network in this context, particularly in providing expert analysis, fostering collaboration, and supporting effective enforcement at national and EU levels.<\/p>\n<p>The Seminar once again demonstrated the strength that comes from bringing together a multiplicity of voices &#8211; academic, institutional, legal, and civil society &#8211; each contributing unique insight to shared challenges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why This Seminar Matters for MPG<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For MPG, the Legal Seminar remains an invaluable annual opportunity to present the work of the Network and the forthcoming publications, and to engage directly with colleagues and partners across Europe who work on similar issues from different angles.
