On 2 December, legal experts from across the EU gathered in Brussels for the annual seminar of the European Equality Law Network.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the EELN Annual Seminar?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The seminar is an annual event which brings together lawyers and legal experts active in the areas of equality and non-discrimination.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Attendees included representatives of the European Commission, a small number of selected European NGOs, as well as the members of the European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discrimination.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Helena Dalli, Commissioner for Equality European Commission, gave a welcome speech and introduced the keynote speaker, Prof. Ruth Rubio Mar\u00edn, Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Sevilla, Spain, followed by Prof. David Oppenheimer, Director, Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law, USA.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Attendees then participated in workshops on the topics of European case law, women in the public sphere, the transposition of the Work Life Balance Directive, indirect discrimination and structural discrimination.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the closing session, Irena Moozov\u00e0, Director at the European Commission for Equality and Union Citizenship in its department for Justice (GD JUST), wrapped up proceedings with a final speech.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why is EELN and its annual\u00a0seminar important?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201cEELN is a\u00a0network that provides information to the commission on the topic of discrimination, involving 36 countries and assessing the level of transposition and implementation of directives on the national level (in terms of gender equality and non-discrimination)\u201d states Isabelle Chopin, Director of MPG and specialist coordinator of non-discrimination law,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, the network provides 36 country reports, comparative analysis\u00a0and 4 thematic reports.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The seminar is one of the yearly highlights for lawyers working in the equality and non-discrimination field, as well as the 80+ legal experts working for the network. It constitutes an invaluable occasion to share practices and experiences with peers from all over Europe and to discuss recent developments in EU law such as recent case law from the Court of Justice of the EU and from the European Court of Human Rights. It also serves as an occasion to not only share practices, but also to present the work and publications undertaken during the year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
