What is included in the review?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

This issue provides an overview of the most important and relevant legal and policy developments in the fields of gender equality and non-discrimination at national level across Europe from 1 January to 30 June 2022, as well as summaries of the most important case law from the Court of Justice of the EU and the European Court of Human Rights in these fields.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, this issue contains four in-depth articles:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. \u2018<\/em>Safeguards and redress for victimisation: Examples from Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy and Poland<\/em>\u2019<\/em> by Margarita S. Ilieva and Andr\u00e1s K\u00e1d\u00e1r, the non-discrimination experts for Bulgaria and Hungary respectively, who explore the regulation of victimisation in these countries and identifies good practices as well as gaps and shortcomings in these jurisdictions.<\/li>\n
  2. \u2018<\/em>Formal and informal mediation of discrimination complaints: A comparison of the legal framework and practice of Austria, Belgium, Ireland and Portugal in discrimination cases<\/em>\u2019 by Cath\u00e9rine Van de Graaf from the University of Ghent, who explores the legal frameworks and practice of mediation procedures in discrimination cases in these three countries.<\/li>\n
  3. \u2018The EU pay transparency proposed directive \u2013 general overview and some comments on the rules on enforcement and sanctions\u2019<\/em> by Laura Carlson from Stockholm University, who explores effective enforcement mechanisms and sanctions in the European Commission\u2019s proposed directive to strengthen the application of the principle of equal pay for equal work or work of equal value between men and women through pay transparency and enforcement mechanisms.<\/li>\n
  4. \u2018<\/em>Intersectionality from critique to practice: Towards an intersectional discrimination test in the context of \u2018neutral dress codes<\/em>\u2019 by Rapha\u00eble Xenidis from the University of Edinburgh, who focuses on the engagement of the CJEU with the issue of intersectional discrimination in the context of the so-called \u2018headscarf\u2019 cases.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Why does it matter?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

    The publishing of European Equality Law Reviews provides a means through which to monitor legal and policy developments \u2014 both positive and negative \u2014 in the fields of gender equality and non-discrimination across Europe. The ability to monitor such developments is the first step toward progress in these areas, as it provides the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions and to correctly assess the transposition and implementation of EU law at the national level. In providing this knowledge, MPG\u2019s involvement in the network contributes to <\/span>MPG\u2019s vision<\/span><\/a> of creating societies in which \u2018people of all backgrounds must have and should know and use their rights to equal treatment and equal opportunities.\u2019\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
