“Immigration status and adolescents’ voting intention in European countries: The importance of immigrant integration policy context“
In this article, Hyungryeol Kim and Michael H. Seltzer explore whether policy efforts to integrate immigrants into society can influence and motivate adolescents of immigrant origin in European countries to participate in the political system of their host country. The authors find that more inclusive integration policies are associated with smaller voting intention gaps between adolescents of immigrant origin and their native peers, even when accounting for individual and family resources. Specifically, inclusive education policies strongly predict voting intention gaps between first-generation and native adolescents, while inclusive citizenship acquisition policies are key for second-generation gaps.
“A virtuous cycle? Migrant integration policies, attitudes toward immigration, and populist radical right voting in Europe“
The article by Piotr Zagorski et al. investigates whether more inclusive migrant integration policies reduce support for populist radical right parties (PRRPs) in European countries. Using data from the European Social Survey and the Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX), the authors find that inclusive integration policies are linked to lower PRRP support and that these policies moderate the influence of attitudes toward migrants on PRRP voting.
