Webinar – Towards the full civic and political participation of New Europeans: Measuring policies across the EU
Webinar – Towards the full civic and political participation of New Europeans: Measuring policies across the EU
– Tuesday, 10 December 2024, 11:00 – 12:30 CET –
Participation in decision-making is a very important aspect of migrant and mobile citizens’ participation in society at large. It is also a way to convey immigrants’ contributions to society and to create social change, thereby developing inclusive democratic societies. In policies that EU countries pursue to include newcomers, though, civic and political participation remains the weakest element. This is why MPG has developed a new Participation Policy Index which measures the level of progress of these policies in all 27 EU member states. The index monitors laws, policies and practices along eight dimensions, including voting rights and encouragement to vote, access to citizenship, representation in political life, support for migrant-led civil society and the civic space, civic education, and the existence of an overall strategy on civic and political participation.
This webinar of the New Europeans Initiative will present the results of this comparative research, identifying the leaders in this policy area and those that are falling behind, along with inspiring local good practices. Next to providing a global overview, discussion will zoom in on measures to encourage participation in elections, and how such policies can help to overcome barriers. Experts will highlight the situation in selected EU countries and debate the resulting implications for democracy in the European Union.
